He intended to express his ancestors' visual traditions into a contemporary form. He gradually explored larger sculptures in bronze, red cedar and Nootka Cypress (yellow cedar), usually portraying figures, animals, and scenes from Haida mythology. Working in the traditional forms and modern media (usually gold, silver and argillite), Reid began by making jewellery. He assisted in the partial reconstruction of a Haida village in the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology. During this time Reid also worked on salvaging artifacts, including many intricately carved totem poles, which were then moldering in abandoned village sites. He became greatly interested in the works of Edenshaw, working to understand the symbolism of his work, much of which had been lost along with many Haida traditions. In 1951, Reid returned to Vancouver, where he eventually established a studio on Granville Island. Upon completing his studies, Reid made his first Haida-inspired piece of jewelry, a bracelet resembling the ones he saw his maternal aunt wear when he was a child. During his spare time, he made regular trips to the Royal Ontario Museum and admired the carved Haida pole installed in the main stairwell, which originated from his grandmother's village of T'aanuu. In 1948, the couple moved to Toronto, where Reid further developed his keen interest in Haida art while working as a radio announcer for CBC Radio and studying jewelry making at the Ryerson Institute of Technology. In 1944, Reid married his first wife, Mabel van Boyen. Gladstone first taught Reid about Haida art, and through him, Bill inherited his tools from his great-great-uncle Charles Edenshaw, a renowned artist who died the year Reid was born. looking for an identity which he had not found in modern western society." In Skidegate Reid spent time with his maternal grandfather, Charles Gladstone, a traditional Haida silversmith. He desired to connect with his relatives and his Indigenous identity, later commenting that "in turning to his ancestors, in reclaiming his heritage for himself, he was. When Reid was in his early twenties, he visited his ancestral home of Skidegate for the first time since he was an infant. However, Reid was raised without knowledge of his Haida heritage due to the oppressive measures of the Indian Act. William Ronald Reid Jr., was born in Victoria, British Columbia his father was American William Ronald Reid Sr., of Scottish-German descent and his mother, Sophie Gladstone Reid, was from the Kaadaas gaah Kiiguwaay, Raven/Wolf Clan of T'anuu, more commonly known as the Haida, one of the First Nations of the Pacific coast.

Amber Smith gets it exactly right., STARRED REVIEW "This is a poignant book that realistically looks at the lasting effects of trauma on love, relationships, and life….Teens will be reminded of Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak. It is The Hero's Journey through a distorted circus mirror-one girl's quest to turn desperation into courage, to become a survivor instead of a victim. The Way I Used to Be explores the aftermath of sexual assault with a precision and searing honesty that is often terrifying, sometimes eerily beautiful, and always completely true. But it also demonstrates one young woman's strength as she navigates the disappointment and unbearable pains of adolescence, of first love and first heartbreak, of friendships broken and rebuilt, and while learning to embrace a power of survival she never knew she had hidden within her heart. Told in four parts-freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior year-this provocative debut reveals the deep cuts of trauma. Nothing makes sense anymore, and she knows she's supposed to tell someone what happened but she can't. What she thought she knew to be true, is now lies. What Eden once loved-who she once loved-she now hates. But the night her brother's best friend rapes her, Eden's world capsizes. Starting high school didn't change who she was. A New York Times bestseller In the tradition of Speak, this extraordinary debut novel shares the unforgettable story of a young woman as she struggles to find strength in the aftermath of an assault. The long-term view Smith takes of Eden's story makes it all the more satisfying when she does find her voice. It's painful to watch Eden disintegrate but also true to the double burden she carries the violation of the rape and the weight of carrying the secret. Smith tracks Eden through her four years in high school, spotlighting her shifting relationship with her friend Mara, the caring boyfriend she lies to, and her increasing acting out with booze and sex. While Eden changes virtually overnight, no one knows what happened largely, it seems, because no one wants to. Kevin tells good-girl, band-geek Eden that no one will believe her, and she's sure that he is right: Kevin is her brother's teammate and roommate, and her family revolves around her brother. These statistics underpin Smith's debut, which opens with 14-year-old Eden being raped by her brother's best friend while her family sleeps down the hall. But it also demonstrates one young woman’s strength as she navigates the disappointment and unbearable pains of adolescence, of first love and first heartbreak, of friendships broken and rebuilt, all while learning to embrace the power of survival she never knew she had hidden within her heart.Īccording to RAINN, the largest anti-sexual-violence organization in the U.S., 80% of rapes are committed by someone the victim knows, and 68% go unreported. Nothing makes sense anymore, and she knows she’s supposed to tell someone what happened but she can’t. But the night her brother’s best friend rapes her, Eden’s world capsizes. These qualities of sound have become quite popular and for some artists, Auto-Tune effect became the feature of their music, the core part of their unique sound by which the audience recognizes them. It also jumps roughly from note to note without the gentle transitions a natural singing would create. With the effect on maximum, the voice becomes similar to computer-generated sound at the same time still sounding quite human. Some artists, though, use Auto-Tune only for the reason of receiving the Auto-Tune effect on their voice. This option is needed when you want to gently correct certain parts of the recorded sound wave. If you know how to use Auto-Tune in graph mode, You can apply manual corrections as you would do using Melodyne studio. An option for manual voice correction is also present in Auto-Tune Pro. To do it, you have to separate a vocal track you want to autotune and apply the plug-in to it with the needed settings. The plug-in can also be used after the recording process is done to correct the vocal. Applying Auto-Tune to the recorded audio. This way you can correct the imperfection of the singing instantly and make the artist sound perfectly in harmony with the music. Auto-Tune automatically shifts the pitch of the voice to the nearest key belonging to the specified harmony. It can be used during recording sessions or live performances to change the pitch of the voice in real-time. By changing some parameters, you also can maximize the famous Auto-Tune sound effect on the voice. If you know how to use Auto-Tune and apply it correctly, you’ll receive the same voice but singing the right notes. This software can be a powerful instrument for a sound engineer, however, only when you understand all its options and settings, you will know how to use Auto-Tune to its full potential.Īuto-Tune allows you to shift the pitch of the vocal to match the needed key automatically. It can be used as a VST plugin for different DAW, such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton, Cubase, and others. How to use Auto-Tune? Auto-Tune can be used live during the recording process and also in post-recording for editing vocals and pitch correction. The initial purpose of the program was pitch correction, now it’s very popular also for its unique effect on the vocal that is used in creating rap, pop, hip-hop, and other genre songs. What is Auto-Tune? Auto-Tune is an instrument created by Antares Audio Technologies that is widely used in modern music. I’ll also give you some presets that in my experience have fit perfectly for mixing songs of different genres. I will answer the question: how does autotune work? I’ll explain for what purposes and how to use Antares Auto-Tune, and explain our favorite tricks for working with this application. This article is a guide that explains how to use Auto-Tune written by an experienced sound engineer. At the end of the canal, the sound waves strike the tightly stretched, highly sensitive membrane known as the tympanic membrane (or eardrum), which vibrates with the waves. Īudition begins in the pinna, the external and visible part of the ear, which is shaped like a funnel to draw in sound waves and guide them into the auditory canal. Prolonged exposure to sounds above 80 decibels can cause hearing loss. The human ear can comfortably hear sounds up to 80 decibels. The sound of a typical conversation (about 60 decibels) is 1,000 times louder than the sound of a faint whisper (30 decibels), whereas the sound of a jackhammer (130 decibels) is 10 billion times louder than the whisper. Each increase in 10 decibels represents a tenfold increase in the loudness of the sound (see Figure 5.18, “Sounds in Everyday Life”). Zero decibels represent the absolute threshold for human hearing, below which we cannot hear a sound. Loudness is measured using the unit of relative loudness known as the decibel. The amplitude, or height of the sound wave, determines how much energy it contains and is perceived as loudness ( the degree of sound volume). Longer sound waves have lower frequency and produce a lower pitch, whereas shorter waves have higher frequency and a higher pitch. The wavelength of the sound wave (known as frequency) is measured in terms of the number of waves that arrive per second and determines our perception of pitch, the perceived frequency of a sound. Unlike light waves, which can travel in a vacuum, sound waves are carried within media such as air, water, or metal, and it is the changes in pressure associated with these media that the ear detects.Īs with light waves, we detect both the wavelength and the amplitude of sound waves. Vibrating objects (such as the human vocal cords or guitar strings) cause air molecules to bump into each other and produce sound waves, which travel from their source as peaks and valleys, much like the ripples that expand outward when a stone is tossed into a pond. Just as the eye detects light waves, the ear detects sound waves. In a fraction of a second, our auditory system receives the sound waves, transmits them to the auditory cortex, compares them to stored knowledge of other voices, and identifies the caller. A mother can pick out her child’s voice from a host of others, and when we pick up the phone we quickly recognize a familiar voice. But the ear is particularly sensitive to sounds in the same frequency as the human voice. The human ear is sensitive to a wide range of sounds, from the faint tick of a clock in a nearby room to the roar of a rock band at a nightclub, and we have the ability to detect very small variations in sound. Sound waves that are collected by our ears are converted into neural impulses, which are sent to the brain where they are integrated with past experience and interpreted as the sounds we experience. Like vision and all the other senses, hearing begins with transduction. Describe the process of transduction in hearing.Draw a picture of the ear, label its key structures and functions, and describe the role they play in hearing. You can transform the chords and harmonic progression to your liking, use the convenient drop-down chord selector, change the basic functionality and directionality of any chord, and spice up the flavor of your music by adding varying degrees of tension and harmonic color to your chords with the simple twist of a knob. Digital Adapters & Miscellaneous Cables. This brings faster memory (and up to 64GB of the stuff), and double the graphics performance. You can configure the MacBook Pro 14-inch with more RAM and storage space, with either 16GB, 32GB and 64GB unified memory, and up to 8TB SSD storage, which of course also adds to the price. The MacBook Pro 14-inch (2021) with an 8-Core CPU, 14-Core GPU M1 Pro with 16GB unified memory and 512GB SSD storage starts at $1,999 / £1,899 / AU$2,999, ($1,899 for education), and the more powerful 10-Core CPU, 16-Core GPU M1 Pro with 16GB Unified Memory and 1TB SSD storage will set you back a hefty $2,499 / £2,399 / AU$3,749. The new MacBook Pro 14-inch (2021) is an incredibly ambitious laptop both in terms of hardware and design, and it’s aimed at creative professionals who need powerful mobile hardware, and that means this is an expensive laptop. As with previous MacBook Pro screens, it also supports the P3 wide color gamut.īattery life has also been drastically lengthened, and can now hit 17 hours, which is remarkable for a workstation laptop of this calibre. Not only does this make videos looks great, but even scrolling through websites benefit from this tech, as it now feels smooth and responsive. ProMotion technology is also included, which offers refresh rates of up to 120Hz, which can be adapted depending on the motion of the content on the screen. If you’re working on photos and HDR videos, your content is never going to have looked so good. The mini-LED technology is the same found in the new iPad Pro, and it’s just as impressive here, offering a huge 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. It’s now larger than the 13-inch model, and is now a Liquid Retina XDR display featuring mini-LED technology. Not only have the internals had an upgrade thanks to the new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, but the screen has been overhauled as well. However, if you do need this kind of firepower, for editing 8K footage, arranging elaborate music scores, or compiling and testing complex code, then you simply won’t find a better laptop. They weren't anime based though, more so a 360-degree 2D shooter game. I think I made the first attempts when I was in middle school in Game Maker. It was one of the first films I watched in the United States and it inspired a big appreciation for science fiction. I think my first experience with science fiction was when I saw Star Wars on VHS when I was 7 years old. Samu: It's something I've always wanted to make for years. how did you even come up with idea for Sunrider in the first place actually, or did somebody else give you the idea?" Nemjen: Make sure you're scanning every pixel in every CG - you may just get your wish. Maybe it'll happen! (I can't make any guarantees though, lol) "Real question, will Sunrider 4 have an in universe space whale sighting CG? Where you're only allowed to pick ONE GIRL to watch the whales with?" Nemjen: The Vanguard firing sequence, very satisfying to watch. “What was your favorite part of Sunrider: Liberation Day, whether making it or playing it?” I liked animating them and they were easier to make than the Sunrider mecha ones, but the big issue right now is that the Game Maker Studio engine does not support video play back, so I'm going to have to think of some clever ways to get a video in if the support isn't added. I'm personally not sure how many fans thought the animated H scene in Starnova were necessary. So the mecha animations for Liberation Day were pretty cool, but we might want to focus more on creating the game play aspects for Sunrider 4. Samu: This one, I don't know the answer to quite yet. "Will your games include more animation in the future?" As it was a different type of VN for LiS too it was something we were able to work out together and therefore very exciting. My background is actually in SaaS project management so this has been something new for me but Sam and Ashton have been very welcoming and helpful with teaching me the ropes. Nemjen: Technically Shining Song Starnova was my first completed project so that helps keep things nice and simple. But I look forward to working on Sunrider 4 next as well. It was also interesting getting the gameplay systems worked out. It was much more different from anything I've worked on before with the most code work out of the projects. Samu: I have the best impression of whichever project I've worked on the most recently, so I would say Idol Empire. "Which one of the completed projects did you enjoy the most and why?" Samu: Ben does his job as PR manager well and gives me the high lights. "Hey Sam, is it true you've always been watching us from the shadows?" Nemjen: He does the job for me, almost like he is trying to avoid me. While emerald tends to be hazy and full of inclusions, aquamarine has remarkably high clarity, another factor that makes it perfect as the center stone for large cocktail rings. It came from the Minas Gerais region of Brazil in 1910. In fact, the largest gem-quality aquamarine crystal ever mined weighed 244 pounds and measured 19 inches long. It works particularly well as a center stone in cocktail rings because it can be found in such large sizes – 10-carat stones are common.
